Autism
Autism, also known as Autism Spectrum Disorder or ASD, is a neurodevelopmental disorder that can affect social functioning, behaviour and communication. The exact cause/s of autism are unknown, however, environmental and genetic factors are believed to play a possible role. More and more research is being done in this area.
As ASD is a spectrum disorder, signs and symptoms are observed on a continuum, meaning that each person will experience autism differently. From a neurodiversity perspective, autism brings with it associated strengths and challenges in communication, language, sensory processing, social interaction, planning, motor skills and self-regulation.
Seeking help from a Psychologist
Given the diverse nature of autism, assessment for ASD and psychological treatment is extremely individualised. Our psychologists are experienced in the diagnosis of ASD, in both adults and children. Our goal is to make this process as easy and stress free as possible. Some clients mention that diagnosis can help to bring them a sense of relief, as they are better able to understand their own or their child’s difficulties and strengths.
After a thorough assessment, our psychologists provide very specific treatment strategies based on the behavioural, emotional, cognitive and academic needs of the individual. As these needs change, so do the treatment strategies. The overarching goal is always to help each individual reach their full potential.
Our psychologists can help with specific challenges that may arise for clients with ASD and their families, such as key life transitions (starting school or moving into employment), social skills, anxiety and mood fluctuations, and sleeping problems.
As well as psychologists, other health professionals such as specialist doctors, occupational therapists, paediatricians, speech pathologists, and naturopaths, work with people who have ASD to support them in a particular aspect of their treatment. Our psychologists are confident in working as part of a multidisciplinary team to provide a collaborative and holistic approach that ensures the best outcomes for their clients.
